What is Logistics Management?

Logistics Management is an emerging field in management discipline that combines sub-disciplines such as industrial engineering, transportation management, and international business, etc.Enterprises that can leverage knowledge and technology in logistics management will integrate inventory, information, technology, energy, and talent flows as a coordinated supply chain.Expanding integrating scopes, supply chain management seeks trade-offs among procurement costs and quality, production costs and efficiency, inventory costs and service levels, distribution costs and delivery speed, as well as alliance cooperation and global competition to enhances an enterprise's competitiveness in the global market.

Course Structure and Course Requirements

Students in undergraduate program are required to take a minimum of 128 credits, including core courses, specialized courses, elective courses, and general education courses. In graduate (Master) program, students are required to take at least 39 credits (excluding the thesis),with 9 credits in research methodology and 12 credits in specialized elective areas. The curriculum design is based on the foundation of Transportation and Warehousing expertise, combined with four specialized functions: Procurement, Production, Distribution and Information Management, as Integrated Logistics Management.

Advanced courses such as International Economics and Trade, Corporate Strategy, and Industrial Policy are provided to further extend the comprehensive framework into Supply Chain Management. The doctoral program andmaster's program with thesis focus primarily on "Logistics Integration" and "Enterprise Logistics," while the master's program and undergraduate program emphasize specialized functional areas and the core concept of "Logistics Integration" in their course planning.

We have planned three specialized programs based on students' future career directions: Production Logistics, Transportation and Distribution, and Enterprise Logistics.

Production Logistics Program: This program is designed for students aspiring to work in the high-tech industry. They can choose courses related to industrial management, providing them with specialized training to excel in roles such as production management, materials management, and enterprise planning.

Transportation and Distribution Program: This program is tailored for undergraduate students interested in careers in transportation and logistics. They can choose courses related to transportation, giving them specialized training to handle tasks such as transportation scheduling and management, international logistics, maritime transport, and air transport.

Enterprise Logistics Program: This program is intended for students looking to engage in logistics integration work. They can select courses related to international business and integration, receiving specialized training to succeed in roles such as international logistics management, channel management, systems engineering, enterprise resource planning, and international trade.

Additionally, students can also choose to enroll in relevant programs offered jointly by our department and the School of Management, such as e-Business Program and RFID Information Application and Security Program. This allows students to obtain certificates in these programs, enhancing their employability in logistics and supply chain management, particularly in the context of e-commerce and information technology.

Laboratories and Research Areas

In support of research development and the establishment of the department's specialization in Logistics Digitalization, our department has established three laboratories and two research centers. These include the Logistics System Simulation Laboratory, Transportation System Laboratory, International Logistics Research Center, International Logistics Research Center, and Enterprise Logistics Research Laboratory. In addition to assisting with course instruction, these laboratories are equipped with various software tools to aid students in conducting projects and research. The respective laboratories/centers and their software are as follows:

Laboratories Main Software
Logistics System Simulation Laboratory   AutoMod、Arena
Transportation System Laboratory   GAMS、TransCAD、Matlab、 AutoLoad、Paramics
International Logistics Research Center   APS、 ILOG、PLM、Minitab
Supply Chain Collaboration Center   Workflow ERP、RFID、Business Intelligence、WMS
Enterprise Logistics Research Laboratory   SS、 AMOS、 LISREL、DEA-Solver、 Expert Choice

Distinctive Pedagogical Characteristics

Integrating Theoretical Concepts with Industrial Application
Our goal is to enhance students' employability, cultivating their ability to harness information technology, quantitative analysis, and emphasizing teamwork and industrial skills. Through small group discussions, case-based learning with software applications, and mentorship in project work, we create a learning environment that fosters collaborative work among students and bidirectional communication between students and instructors. Students also have the opportunity to participate in the e-commerge program as part of our Teaching Excellence Initiative.

Emphasized on International Perspective and Industry Experience
In terms of promoting an international perspective, our department has established dual-degree programs with the Australian Maritime College (AMC). Graduate students have the opportunity to apply for master's degree programs at the Australian Maritime College. Through the mechanism of mutual credit recognition and thesis writing, students can obtain master's degrees from both schools in just two and a half years. We have also signed a cooperative agreement with Thammasat University in Thailand, allowing students to engage in exchange program at their university. Students can also pursue their Master of Business Administration (MBA) at the College of Management at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, USA.

We invite numerous domestic and international scholars and industry experts to deliver lectures each semester. Additionally, we host academic seminars and industry forums annually. In 2008, the Chinese Institute of Transportation held its annual conference at our university, co-organizing the 2008 Transport Annual Meeting with our department, bringing together experts and scholars from multiple countries to provide valuable perspectives to our students. In 2009, in collaboration with the Chinese Institute of Logistics, we organized our annual conference, providing students with opportunities to present their research topics to over 200 logistics company executives, allowing them to understand industry needs at an early stage. Furthermore, our department has appointed several industry executives as adjunct faculty members to impart industrial experience and the correct workplace concepts. Our specialized courses often include industry visits and field trips, enabling students to learn and validate their knowledge through industrial experiences.

Professional Certifications
In order to enhance students' employability, our department collaborates with the Chinese Institute of Logistics to offer training courses, enabling students to qualify for the international professional logistics certification CILT (Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport) awarded by the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport in the United Kingdom (CILT-UK). We also collaborate with the Taiwan Global Logistics Development Association to provide training courses that equip students with the qualifications to obtain the international logistics professional certification SOLE-CPL (Certified Professional Logistician) awarded by the Society of Logistics Engineers in the United States (SOLE).

Additionally, our department possesses Enterprise Resource Planning (Workflow ERP) and Business Intelligence Systems (V-Point). Students have the opportunity to operate these related systems and can pursue professional certifications in ERP or Business Intelligence from the Chinese Enterprise Resource Planning Association.

Exciting Extracurricular and Intercollegiate Activities
In addition to the activities organized by the school and various clubs, the department's student association holds annual events, including orientation camps, singing competition co-hosted with other departments, logistics-themed week with Integrated Project Presentations, farewell party for graduating students, participation in relay races and sports competitions during the university's anniversary, as well as nationwide events like the "大交盃" and "大工盃" competitions where related departments from all over the country join together. Furthermore, the graduate student association of our department collaborates with master's program students to engage in dialogue sessions with undergraduate students to help them understand the future workplace experiences.
